Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis

What is Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis?

Indications:

    • JPS is performed in immature dogs at high risk for arthritis associated with hip dysplasia.
    • It involves inducing premature closure of the pubic symphysis using thermal necrosis.
    • Recommended for breeds susceptible to hip dysplasia.

Procedure:

    • The pubic bone is destroyed with electrocautery, allowing the remaining pelvis to grow around the acetabulum (hip sockets).
    • Result: stable hip and reduced arthritis risk later in life.
    • Ideal age for surgery: under 16 weeks.

Benefits:

    • Improved hip congruity.
    • Reduced hip laxity and degenerative changes.
    • Positive recovery if performed early.
