What is Nares Resection Add-On?
Nares resection, also known as narrowed nostril correction, is a surgical procedure performed to widen the external nares (nostrils) in brachycephalic dogs. These breeds, such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs, often have stenotic (narrowed) nares, which can contribute to breathing difficulties.
Indications:
- Stenotic Nares:
- Brachycephalic dogs frequently have narrowed nostrils, leading to increased airway resistance.
- Surgical widening of the nares is indicated when the dog experiences noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, or heat sensitivity due to stenotic nares.
Procedure:
Surgical Technique:
- Wedge Resection: The surgeon removes a wedge-shaped section of the external nares (Figure 2).
- Laser Ablation: Laser removal of nasal cartilage to widen the nares.
- Benefits: Both techniques improve airflow by widening the nostrils.
Postoperative Care:
- Monitoring: Close observation for signs of complications (swelling, bleeding, or altered breathing).
- Improved Breathing: Most dogs experience easier breathing after nares resection.
Benefits:
- Airway Improvement:
- Nares resection allows better airflow, reducing respiratory effort.
- Noisy breathing and exercise intolerance are alleviated.
- Quality of Life Enhancement:
- Dogs can breathe more comfortably and engage in normal activities.
Remember that individual cases may vary, and consulting a veterinarian is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment.
