What is a Pleural Port?
The Pleural Port is a subcutaneous vascular access port designed for veterinary patients. It provides a more comfortable way to gain repeated access to the pleural cavity for both the delivery of medications (including fluids) and withdrawal of pleural effusions. Here are the key points:
Indications:
- Chronic Pleural Effusion: The Pleural Port is commonly used when managing chronic pleural effusions.
- Repeated Treatments: It eliminates the need for repeated entry into the pleural space for each treatment, reducing inflammation and pain associated with thoracocentesis.
Procedure:
- The Pleural Port is surgically placed subcutaneously.
- It consists of an access port connected to a drainage catheter.
- The port chamber, covered by a rigid silicone septum, serves as the point of entry for intracavitary access.
- A specially designed non-coring needle (Huber point needle) penetrates the port septum for access.
- The drainage catheter provides entry into the pleural space.
Post-Operative Care:
- Pain management is essential.
- Close monitoring during recovery.
- Minimizes the risk of infection and pulmonary damage due to its subcutaneous location.
Benefits:
- Efficient Access: Allows controlled infusion into or withdrawal from the pleural cavity.
- Comfort for Patients: Reduces the need for repeated invasive procedures.
- Low Profile and Biocompatible: Light-weight design suitable for all sizes of canine and feline patients.
